General Information
Money Matters: Let's Chat About Currency!
In South Africa, it’s all about the Rand (ZAR), but watch out for those American Express cards – they’re not always welcome. Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted and are safe to use.
And if you’re headed to Zimbabwe, Botswana, or Tanzania, US dollars are the way to go! But don’t worry, you can always grab local currency from ATMs or exchange offices, or even pre-order it from your bank. Just be sure to let your bank know about your travel plans first!

Here’s what you need to have on hand for a game drive:
Using a backpack to carry these essential items with you during wildlife viewing activities or general travel keeps your hands free and ensures you have everything you need close at hand.
- Bandana/Buff: A bandana is a must-pack item for your safari adventure. Not only can it be soaked in water for a refreshing neck wrap when temperatures rise, but it also doubles as protection against dust or windburn, ensuring your comfort throughout your safari experience.
- Binoculars: Enhance your wildlife viewing experience by getting a closer look at animals from a distance.
- Camera, spare batteries, XD cards: Capture those memorable moments without worrying about running out of battery or storage space.
- Chapstick/lip balm: Don’t forget to pack these. It’s a small item but can be incredibly helpful in keeping your lips moisturized, especially in dry or windy conditions during your game drives or other outdoor activities.
- Flashlight: Useful if your game drive extends into the evening or if you need it for any other activities.
- Hat: Protect yourself from the sun’s rays.
- Mosquito repellent: Keep those pesky insects at bay, especially during dawn and dusk.
- Personal medication: Carry any necessary medications you may need during the drive.
- Raincoat: Be prepared for unexpected rain showers or it can be used as a windbreaker.
- Poncho: An essential item for your safari adventure, as it not only provides coverage for your legs but also protects your backpack while you’re in a game-viewing vehicle.
- Sunglasses: Quality sunglasses with UV protection will ensure clear vision and comfort throughout your safari experience. They’ll not only protect your eyes from the bright sun but also shield them from dust and debris while you’re out in the wild.
- Suntan lotion: Protect your skin from the sun’s UV rays.
- Warm clothing or jacket: Even in warmer climates, temperatures can drop during early morning or evening drives.
Being Respectful in the Wild: Etiquette Tips for Wildlife Encounters!
Let’s delve into Gamedrive Etiquette with some friendly guidelines to ensure everyone has an amazing time during their African adventure:
- Respect for Diversity: Embrace the diversity of your fellow travelers’ backgrounds and viewpoints. Engaging in questions and discussions enriches everyone’s experience.
- Quiet Observation: When spotting wildlife, maintain a low level of excitement. Use the clock face concept to quietly point out animals, with the front of the vehicle at 12 o’clock.
- Stay Seated: Unless given permission to stand, remain seated. This minimizes disturbance to the animals and ensures everyone enjoys unobstructed views.
- Considerate Filming: If filming, kindly request a moment of quiet from fellow adventurers to capture the moment effectively.
- Communicate Visibility: If something isn’t visible to you, inform the guide politely, and they’ll adjust for better viewing opportunities.
- Share Photo Opportunities: Be mindful when taking photos, allowing everyone a chance to capture the sights.
- No Littering: Avoid dropping anything from the vehicle; instead, inform the guide for retrieval.
- Mindful of Obstacles: Be cautious of low-hanging branches and thorny bushes while on the drive.
- Maintain Serenity: Keep voices low and mobile phones silent to maintain a tranquil atmosphere for both wildlife and fellow travelers.
- Respect Wildlife Boundaries: Refrain from attempting to interact with wildlife to ensure both their safety and yours.
- Snacks and Drinks: Enjoy snacks and drinks when the vehicle is stationary to prevent any distractions during the drive.
- Questions and Queries: If you have questions, politely get your ranger’s attention instead of shouting out.
- Voice Concerns: Follow the ranger’s instructions, and if you feel uncomfortable or have concerns, don’t hesitate to speak up.
- Comfortable Attire: Dress comfortably and avoid bright colors to blend in with the natural surroundings.
- Respect all Sightings: Appreciate and respect all wildlife sightings, as each one holds significance for someone in the group.
- Minimize Flash Photography: During night drives, keep flash photography to a minimum and rely on the ranger’s spotlight for illumination.
- Protect Wildlife: Exercise caution when sharing photos to avoid disclosing sensitive locations, particularly with endangered species like rhinos, to safeguard them from potential threats.
By adhering to these guidelines, we ensure a safe, respectful, and unforgettable safari experience for everyone involved. Enjoy the adventure!
Gratitude and Giving Back: A Guide to Tipping on Safari!
Tipping etiquette for guides, drivers, and other staff members on a photographic safari is an essential aspect of showing appreciation for exceptional service. While gratuities are generally not included in the overall cost of the safari, they are customary and greatly appreciated by the individuals providing services. Here are some general guidelines to consider:
- Guides and Drivers: Guides and drivers play a pivotal role in creating memorable safari experiences. It’s common to tip them individually based on the level of service and duration of the safari. A typical range is between $10 to $20 per day, per person for guides, and slightly less for drivers.
- Camp and Lodge Staff: At accommodations where staff members assist with meals, housekeeping, and other services, it’s customary to leave a gratuity at the end of your stay. This can be given as a lump sum at the reception. A suggested amount is around $5 to $10 per guest, per day.
- Porters and Other Service Providers: If porters assist with luggage at airports or lodges, or if other staff members provide additional services during your safari, it’s polite to tip them accordingly. This can vary depending on the level of assistance provided but is usually a small amount per service. A suggested amount is $1 to $2 per guest.
While gratuities are not typically included in the overall cost of the safari, some packages may offer the option to pre-pay gratuities as part of the package. However, tipping remains a personal decision, and it’s essential to consider the level of service received and tip accordingly, while also respecting the local customs and practices of the destination.

Big Five: One of the highlights of any safari is the opportunity to spot some of the
Big Five: lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards, and rhinoceroses. These iconic animals are often the focus of safari game drives.
Predators: In addition to the Big Five, you may encounter other predators such as cheetahs, hyenas, wild dogs, and smaller cats like servals and caracals.

Reptiles: Keep an eye out for crocodiles basking in the sun along riverbanks, as well as skinks, lizards, chameleons, tortoises, terrapins, and very rarely a snake.
Small Mammals: While not as prominent as the larger animals, you may also encounter smaller mammals such as meerkats, mongooses, bats, and various rodents.
Scenic Landscapes: Beyond the wildlife, African safaris offer stunning landscapes, including vast savannas, lush forests, rolling hills, and dramatic mountains. Sunset and sunrise views over the African plains are particularly breathtaking.
Cultural Experiences: Depending on your safari destination, you may have the opportunity to interact with local communities and learn about their rich cultures and traditions.
Remember that wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, as animals roam freely in their natural habitats. However, experienced guides and trackers will do their best to lead you to prime viewing spots and maximize your chances of encountering Africa’s magnificent wildlife.
Staying Healthy on Safari: Do I Need Medical Precautions?
Vaccinations and malaria prophylaxis are things to consider when planning your safari adventure. It’s all about staying safe and healthy while you’re exploring the beautiful landscapes and incredible wildlife. Some of our safari options do not go into regions where you need malaria prophylaxis. Chat with your healthcare provider before your trip, as they can recommend specific vaccines based on the regions you’ll be visiting. Common ones include Hepatitis A and Typhoid. Malaria can be a concern in certain areas, so your doctor might suggest preventive medication. It’s essential to have these conversations early, as some vaccinations require multiple doses over several weeks. Your health is a priority, so don’t hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for personalized advice tailored to your safari plans!
Timing Your Safari Right: When's the Best Time to Go?
Finding the perfect time for your safari hinges on what you’re looking to discover! Each season brings its own magic.
To catch the awe-inspiring Great Migration in East Africa, mark your calendar for July to October. That’s when millions of wildebeests and other animals trek across the Serengeti, painting the landscape with their epic journey.
For prime wildlife sightings in Southern Africa, set your sights on the dry winter months from May to September. During this period, animals congregate around watering holes, offering excellent viewing opportunities.
If birdwatching excites you, consider planning your visit during the lush summer months from November to April. This is when migratory birds flock to the region, adding a burst of color to the scenery.
Ultimately, the ideal safari timing hinges on your preferences and the adventures you crave. Remember to delve into the climate and wildlife habits of your chosen destination to tailor your safari to perfection! Our safari experiences are carefully curated to immerse you in the wonders of nature while championing conservation and ecosystem preservation.
Family Fun on Safari: Bringing Kids Along What You Need to Know!
Absolutely, we understand the importance of providing a safe and enjoyable experience for all our guests, including families with children. To ensure that everyone has a memorable time, we typically recommend a minimum age of 11 for children joining our safaris. This is because younger children may not have the attention span or maturity to fully appreciate and enjoy the safari experience.
Moreover, we prioritize creating a comfortable and suitable environment for families. Therefore, we do not include children in adult-only groups, as this may not be conducive to the enjoyment of both children and adults alike. Instead, we encourage families traveling with children to arrange a safari focused on their group, where they can enjoy the experience with other family members or friends.
By tailoring the safari experience to the needs and preferences of each group, we aim to provide a safe and enriching adventure for families, ensuring that everyone can fully immerse themselves in the wonders of the African wilderness.
Accommodation Options: Where Can I Stay on Safari?
Embark on your safari adventure in Africa and discover a diverse range of accommodations awaiting you. From luxurious bush tents, offering the perfect blend of glamour and camping (glamping), to expansive lodges boasting elegant interiors, plunge pools, and mesmerizing panoramas, Africa has it all. Whether you prefer to linger on a scenic viewing deck, swap stories around a campfire boma, or revel in the tranquility of off-the-grid seclusion, each accommodation promises the epitome of comfort and natural beauty.
Our safari experiences are carefully crafted to ensure that each guest enjoys the best possible stay, taking into account factors such as the time of travel, animal movement patterns, and the overall safari experience we aim to provide. For instance, during certain times of the year, when specific wildlife sightings are more prevalent in certain areas, we strategically choose accommodations to maximize our chances of encountering these animals up close. This might involve staying in tented camps positioned near watering holes where animals gather, or lodges situated along migration routes.
Additionally, we understand that the ambiance and atmosphere of the accommodations play a crucial role in shaping the safari experience. Whether you seek a more intimate and secluded setting or a luxurious retreat with all the amenities, we select accommodations that align with your preferences and expectations.
Ultimately, our goal is to create unforgettable safari experiences that showcase the beauty of Africa’s wildlife while providing unparalleled comfort and hospitality throughout your journey. By carefully selecting accommodations based on various factors, we ensure that each safari is uniquely tailored to meet your needs and desires.
Staying Connected: Is Wi-Fi Available in the Wild?
Let’s discuss Wi-Fi availability during safaris. While it’s available in certain areas, its reliability varies depending on your location and the type of safari you choose. Typically, Wi-Fi is accessible in communal spaces such as the main lodge, dining areas, or guest lounges. This is convenient for keeping in touch with loved ones or sharing your safari experiences online.
However, consider the value of disconnecting from technology during your safari adventure. Unplugging can enhance your connection with nature, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the wilderness without distractions. While Wi-Fi may be available in some places, embracing a tech-free experience can lead to a more profound safari experience, creating unforgettable memories in the heart of the wilderness.
